What is PR?

What is PR?

PR = Public relations. PR is an interesting field, one of those that the world just cannot seem to get enough of. “What is public relations?”, “what does it do?”, “how does it work”, “why is it needed” and more are just some of the burning questions pertaining to Public Relations, or PR as it is commonly know. The interest surrounding PR stems from the fact that while all of us have a vague idea and generic understanding of what PR is, very few laymen actually understand the full scope of PR.

Public Relations refers to any activity or process undertaken by an individual or an organization to help build, improve and maintain the positive image of an individual, organization or come in front of the publics who are interested. The term “publics”, in PR, refers to the people who are directly or indirectly involved with the person or the organization in some give-and-take process and whose opinion has the power to affect the success and stability of the person or organization. Public Relations, thus, is all about maintaining positive relations with the people who wield influence over deciding the future of the subject of the PR activity.

PR is essential for anybody and everybody who needs to maintain a favorable public persona. Celebrities hire PR specialists all the time to ensure they are represented in a good light in the press. Politicians need PR teams to maintain favor with voters. Governments are the largest clients of PR firms because their very power in a democracy stems from how much they are liked by the people. Businesses can thrive or be ruined on the basis of their PR strategies.

Business leaders are some of the most concerned with Public Relations. When it comes to the success of a business organization, there are many people to be taken into consideration- customers, partner alliances, clients, prospective clients, target market, official groups, the media, government bodies and so on. Gaining an insight into the concerns and desires of each of these groups and being able to meet their expectations, while also keeping a track of how these interest groups view your organization is what PR is all about. And in situations when the opinion of any of these interest groups is not too favorable, PR also concerns itself with repairing the damage.

When it comes to business, PR is the act of spreading any news or publicity, generally through the media, about one’s company, one’s services and products in a positive light, which in turn will enable the business to develop strong bonds with its publics. As is obvious, PR is intrinsically linked with the news and business media, and maintaining good relations with the press is crucial to effective PR strategies.

Given how crucial PR can be to making or breaking a business, most organizations hire teams of PR specialists or have an in-house PR team managing their PR concerns. From keeping strong links with the press to furnishing media publications with positive stories, from seeking free publicity opportunities to managing any image crisis that might arise, a PR team is indispensable for any business.

If you want to learn how to be the envy of others, you’ve got to learn to see yourself in a special light. No, we don’t mean you have to get pigheaded about yourself! You just need to feel good about yourself and focus on the plusses and cancel out the minuses over time. A key to making others envy you is to be confident and self-assured and you can’t be either of those things if you don’t believe in yourself.

List down the talents and strengths you think you have and why you think you’re good at those things. You don’t have to be particular about what you note, it could be an attitudinal strength, a verbal or physical skill, maybe you’re really good at managing people or you might just be unusually intuitive. Recognizing your strengths will help you channel them better and you’ll feel good about yourself.

Set a high standard for yourself. Whether you have a role model you really aspire to be like or you have decided on some ideals you want to achieve or maintain, keeping a high standard will help you stay future-focused and never let you get complacent or lazy. When you are intent on achieving, you will, and this will keep you running ahead in the game- and leave the others biting your dust trail!

Be passionate. Skills can be acquired and honed, knowledge can be collected and wisdom comes with time. However, none of these strengths will ensure success or set you apart from the herd if you don’t have passion in you. Pure, unbridled passion is the key to enjoying your work and life and loving every minute of it. And when you’re that happy, you are bound to glow. And when you glow, you are going to master the art of how to be the envy of other people.

Be confident and poised. Even when you make mistakes, don’t allow them to reduce you to an nervous weakling. People envy those who seem to have everything under their control- even when they don’t.

Fashion Seasons

fashion week is a fashion industry event, lasting approximately one week, which allows fashion designers, brands or "houses" to display their latest collections in runway shows and buyers and the media to take a look at the latest trends. Most importantly, these events let the industry know what's "in" and what's "out" for the season. The most prominent fashion weeks are held in the four fashion capitals of the world: New York CityLondonMilan, and Paris. Some other important fashion weeks in the world are held in AustraliaBangaloreJakartaBerlinBarcelonaSeoulTokyoSão PauloLos AngelesŁódźHong KongBuenos AiresSingaporeTorontoMadrid.

Characteristics

In the major fashion capitals, fashion weeks are semiannual events. January through April designers showcase their autumn and winter collections and September through November the spring/summer collections are shown. Fashion weeks must be held several months in advance of the season to allow the press and buyers a chance to preview fashion designs for the following season. This is also to allow time for retailers to arrange to purchase or incorporate the designers into their retail marketing. Latest innovations in dress designs are showcased by renowned fashion designers during these fashion weeks, and all these latest collections are covered in magazines such as designerzcentraland Vogue.

Schedule

New York City, London, Milan, and Paris each host a fashion week twice a year with New York beginning each season and the other cities following in the aforementioned order.
There are two major seasons per year - Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer. For womenswear, the Autumn/Winter shows always start in New York in February and end in Paris in March. Spring/Summer shows start in New York in September and end in Paris in October. Menswear Autumn/Winter shows start in January in Milan for typically less than a week followed by another short week in Paris. Menswear Spring/Summer shows are done in June. Womenswear haute coutureshows typically happen in Paris a week after the Menswear Paris shows. For the first time, womenswear haute couture will also be shown in Singapore, during its haute couture Women's Fashion Week in October 2011. This will be the first time womenswear haute couture shows are held outside of Paris.
Over the past few years,When and more designers have shown inter-seasonal collections between the traditional Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer seasons. These collections are usually more commercial than the main season collections and help shorten the customer's wait for new season clothes. The inter-seasonal collections are Resort/Cruise (before Spring/Summer) and Pre-Fall (before Autumn/Winter). There is no fixed schedule for these shows in any of the major fashion capitals but they typically happen three months after the main season shows. Some designers show their inter-seasonal collections outside their home city. For example, Karl Lagerfeld has shown his Resort and Pre-Fall collections for Chanel in cities such as Moscow, Los Angeles and Monte Carlo instead of Paris. Many designers also put on presentations as opposed to traditional shows during Resort and Pre-Fall either to cut down costs or because they feel the clothes can be better understood in this medium.
Some fashion weeks can be genre-specific, such as a Miami Fashion Week (swimwear), Rio Summer (swimwear), Prêt-a-Porter (ready-to-wear) Fashion Week, Couture (one-of-a-kind designer original) Fashion Week and Bridal Fashion Week, while Portland (Oregon, USA) Fashion Week shows some eco-friendly designers.

Fashion Calendar

  • The fashion industry calendar is divided into two major time seasons. Spring generally refers to the six-month period from January to June, and Fall refers to the months from July to December. These are the most traditionally used dividing marks, although individual designers or stores may choose to operate using slightly different months or timing.

Fashion Week

  • Fashion Week occurs twice a year, in February and in September. This weeklong event consists of a series of fashion shows presented by individual designers and fashion labels. The most publicized American fashion week takes place in Bryant Park in New York City. Fall clothing is shown in February, and Spring is shown in September. Fashion Week serves two purposes. First, it attracts publicity for the fashion industry. Secondly, retailers view designers' latest collections and begin buying next season's merchandise.

Fall

  • Fall fashion will typically set in stores in July, in time for the back-to-school shopping period. Generally, spring and summer merchandise would go on permanent sale at this point. Fall clothing often shows a jewel-tone color palette, long sleeves, heavier fabrics and light outerwear. A retailer may choose to set different weather-appropriate merchandise in stores that are located in warmer climates.

Winter/ Holiday

  • Winter/holiday season clothing is very important--this is the merchandise that is in stores during Thanksgiving and Christmas, a time period which produces a very large sales volume. Winter/holiday clothing will usually arrive in stores from late October to early November and will carry through the rest of the calendar year. Regardless of fashion trends, one can usually expect to see velvets, embellished clothing, heavy outerwear and party dresses in stores at this time.

Seasonless Dressing

  • "Seasonless dressing" is a recent fashion movement, describing a trend of wearing the same fashions year-round. People are spending increased amounts of time in climate-controlled environments. Air-conditioned and heated cars and work spaces equal less time in natural temperatures, and thus, less demand for heavy winter clothing. This means that fall and winter clothing may begin to appear and feel less autumnal--designers will show lighter fabrics and lighter colors. Summer clothing could become acceptable as year-round clothing--for example, summer dresses can be adapted for fall by layering turtlenecks and tights underneath.
