What is Management

In a world where most things cannot happen without management, and all corporate successes depend on good management; the question of what is management is surprisingly popular. We all know that good management is important and that knowing how to manage employees or learn strong management skills is essential, but what is management exactly? What does it involve and what is its role?

Management can be understood to be a process or set of activities that are carried out with the aim of extracting the maximum output out of people and resources. Management is the process of organizing, structuring, disciplining, empowering and stimulating resources and people to produce results. Management is the art of knowing how to get the best out of people and resources so that your ultimate goal can be realized. In the business world, management refers to harnessing the potential of the employees and leading the corporate team to success after success.

Management has two aspects: managing oneself as a team-player as well as team leader, and the other is to manage the other people. A manager in a corporate organization needs to learn both, because he is also an employee and has other duties to perform as well- hence, management involves giving your best as well as getting the best out of the others.

We have all heard the adage that time is money, yet most employees continue to waste time and value it very little. The key to being a good manager and mastering the art of management is knowing one’s own strengths and limitations, as well as those of the team. Strategic Management


The process of specifying the objectives of an organization; formulating the policies and plans to achieve the said objectives along with allocating resources for the same is known as strategic management. Strategic management is not actually a task but a set of managerial skills that are meant to be performed across the cross-section of the organization. In fact, it is considered to be the most superior level of managerial activity in any organization. The basic intent of strategic management is to maximize the potential of achieving the organization’s business objectives.

The term is perhaps the most over-used and identifiable from the business world. Although most have heard of it, few know what its usage is for general businesses. The truth is that when used to its full potential and effect, strategic management can prove to be the key to make your business prosper and grow over a period of time. The entire process is a combination of two smaller functions- the formulation of strategy and the implementation of strategy. The first step involves doing a situational analysis with respect to the organizational goals, the current scenario and the desired effect- both micro-environmental and macro-environmental as well as both internal and external. The objectives have to be set, which involves formulating the vision statements or the mission statements and the different objectives. Then comes the second process of strategy implementation that comprises of resource allocation, the establishment of a hierarchy and chain of command for the task at hand and then assigning individual tasks based on individual strengths and attributes as well as the overall group dynamics. This stage of the process also involves monitoring then results and evaluating the progress and success or failure of the process so far.

Basically, through strategic management, one has to plan the future for the organization in an organized way. There could be three basic types of strategies one could adopt during strategic management- long-term, short-term or functional. Long-term strategizing is absolutely essential for any organization in order to achieve long term goals i.e. goals for the next one to five years. They might be less detailed strategies but they still act as blueprints for the intended future of the organization. However, the long-term strategies are meaningless if there are no effective short-term strategies in place. These strategies concern your organization’s plans for now and the present, basically for a twelve-month timeframe. The employees need to be incorporated into the planning process for any strategy to work. Most organizations adopt both long-term and short-term strategies in tandem so that both the long-term and short-term goals of the organization can be met. In addition, it is also advisable to employ functional strategies from time to time to help you with the specific functions in the business.

Adherence to the set plan is a must if one wants to grow and prosper. One needs to avoid the grave mistake of over-estimating the competence and potential of the resources at hand or neglecting the time management aspect of the process, and only can strategic management actually help achieve the organizational goals.

What is Leadership


Harry S. Truman once said, “Men make history and not the other way around. In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better”. It is true that no growth and advancement is possible without the effort and dedication of men and teamwork, but without a great leader to marshal the strengths and efforts of men, no move forward can be achieved.

Understanding what is leadership is not easy, for there are many explanations and forms of leadership. There are several times when a leader is charged with the challenge of shifting between an authority figure and a friendly one. "At the age of seven, a young boy and his family were forced out of their home. The boy had to work to support his family. At the age of nine, his mother passed away. When he grew up, the young man was keen to go to law school, but had no education.


At 22, he lost his job as a store clerk. At 23, he ran for state legislature and lost. The same year, he went into business. It failed, leaving him with a debt that took him 17 years to repay. At 27, he had a nervous breakdown.

You might think you’ve got a great memory or that little post-it you stuck on your computer monitor will remind you, but the truth is, with a dozen different things on your plate, a few are likely to slip through, as is the post-it. Keep a planner and keep all your important information jotted down- neatly!






Make the most of free moments here and there! You know, it’s hardly likely that you’ll get a 2-hour chunk at a go to do all the little stuff, but if you put together all the random free moments you have during the day, you probably have more than 2 hours total. Instead of waiting for one big bit of time to clear up, use the little bits. Make a phone call in under 5 minutes, respond to that e-mail you’ve been putting off, run an errand, get those documents photocopied, catch up with a colleague- whatever needs your attention!

You just need to feel good about yourself and focus on the plusses and cancel out the minuses over time. A key to making others envy you is to be confident and self-assured and you can’t be either of those things if you don’t believe in yourself.






List down the talents and strengths you think you have and why you think you’re good at those things. You don’t have to be particular about what you note, it could be an attitudinal strength, a verbal or physical skill, maybe you’re really good at managing people or you might just be unusually intuitive. Recognizing your strengths will help you channel them better and you’ll feel good about yourself.






Set a high standard for yourself. Whether you have a role model you really aspire to be like or you have decided on some ideals you want to achieve or maintain, keeping a high standard will help you stay future-focused and never let you get complacent or lazy. When you are intent on achieving, you will, and this will keep you running ahead in the game- and leave the others biting your dust trail!






Be passionate. Skills can be acquired and honed, knowledge can be collected and wisdom comes with time. However, none of these strengths will ensure success or set you apart from the herd if you don’t have passion in you. Pure, unbridled passion is the key to enjoying your work and life and loving every minute of it. And when you’re that happy, you are bound to glow. And when you glow, you are going to master the art of how to be the envy of other people.



Be confident and poised. Even when you make mistakes, don’t allow them to reduce you to an nervous weakling. People envy those who seem to have everything under their control- even when they don’t.
